Pocketed Accordion Book in a Tin

Inside the 'Handmade Book Club' there is a guest workshop each month. This month Bel Mills from Scrap Paper Circus taught us how to make a mini pocketed accordion-style book that fits a small tin.

Bij de 'Handmade Book Club' is er elke maand een gast workshop. Deze maand leerde Bel Mills van Scrap Paper Circus ons hoe je een mini accordion boekje maakt van enveloppes. Het boekje past in een blikje.

 

For my Paris inspired project I used a Tim Holtz tin that I decorated using scrapbook paper, rubber stamps, vintage post stamps and embroidery thread.

Mijn project heeft als thema Parijs. Ik werkte met een blikje van Tim Holtz dat ik versierde met scrapbook papier, een oude postzegel, stempelwerk en kruisjessteken.

I again added a ribbon to easily lift out the mini book.

Ook weer een lint aangebracht om het boekje makkelijk uit het doosje te kunnen nemen.

I folded and decorated 6 envelopes with washi tape and tabs. Made an accordion book with the mini envelopes by adhering circles that work as hinges.

Ik vouwde en versierde 6 enveloppes met washi tape en tabjes. Met deze enveloppes maakte ik een accordion boekje door cirkels op te kleven die als scharnieren werken.

Each envelope holds a collaged card.

In elke enveloppe zit een kaartje waar ik een collage op maakte.

 To create the cards I used mail/Paris themed stickers, Darkroom Door stamps and photochips, vintage post stamps... To add some contrast I embroidered a few red cross stitches on each card as well. 

It was a fun project to make and I was able to use a lot of things from my stash. Happy me :)

Voor deze kaartjes gebruikte ik stickers met thema post/Parijs, Darkroom Door stempels en photochips, oude postzegels...Voor wat extra contrast borduurde ik ook op elk kaartje één of meer rode kruisjessteken.

Het was een tof project om te maken en ik kon veel dingen uit mijn voorraad opgebruiken. Helemaal blij mee :)

Each month Ali Manning posts a brand new bookbinding project in the Handmade Book Club. This month's book is an open flat notebook in a tin.

Elke maand post Ali Manning een nieuw boekbindproject in de Handmade Book Club. Deze maand leert ze ons hoe je een vlak openvallend notaboekje maakt dat in een blikje past. 

 

Here's my taken on the challenge. I decorated the inside of a biscuit tin with handmade paper and added a ribbon to the bottom to easily lift the booklet out of the tin.

Vandaag toon ik wat ik maakte voor de uitdaging. Ik begon met het koekblikje aan de binnenkant te bekleden met handgeschept papier. Ik bevestigde aan de bodem ook een lint om het boekje gemakkelijk uit het blik te kunnen halen.

I bought the tin as well as the postcard I used on the cover a long time ago during a ski trip in France. It finally came to good use :)

Ik kocht het blik en de postkaart die ik gebruikte voor de kaft lang geleden tijdens een skireis in Frankrijk. Het kwam eindelijk van pas :)

Each signature has a signature wrapper. I folded the signature wrappers from cardstock in matching colors.

Elke katern kreeg een wikkel. Ik gebruikte hiervoor kaartkarton in bijpassende kleuren.

Love how the spine turned out.

De verschillende kleurtjes zorgen voor een leuk effect op de rug van het boekje.

 I wrapped a piece of red elastic cord around the notebook and embellished the cord with a charm from my stash.

Een stuk rood elastisch koord rond het boekje gewikkeld  en het koord versierd met een bedeltje uit mijn voorraad.

I have a big collection of tins so stay tuned for more books in a tin :)

Ik heb een tijdje blikjes verzameld dus ik heb een grote collectie. Er komen nog meer boekjes in een blik aan :)

Fabric Cover #2

 

Each month Ali Manning posts a brand new bookbinding project in the Handmade Book Club. Books with fabric covers was the topic in March. 

For my second take on this challenge I worked with the fabric of an old pair of jeans.

Elke maand post Ali Manning een nieuw boekbindproject in de Handmade Book Club. In maart was het onderwerp boeken met stoffen kaften.

Ik maakte een tweede boekje voor de uitdaging. Deze keer ging ik aan de slag met de stof van een oude jeans.

For the 6 signatures I used Khadi paper. Khadi paper is handmade paper from India and is made from 100 % recycled cotton rag. Love the torn edges.

De 6 katernen vouwde ik van Khadi papier. Khadi papier is handgeschept papier uit Indïe. Het wordt gemaakt van 100% gerecycleerd katoen. De gescheurde randen maken het papier nog mooier. 

I attached the signatures to the cover with a chain stitch.

De katernen aan de kaft genaaid met een kettingsteek.

For the inside cover and the bird I worked with Tilda fabric. 

Voor de binnenkant van de kaft en voor de vogel koos ik Tilda stofjes.

Inside the 'Handmade Book Club' there is a monthly guest workshop. During March Buffy Greer from B2XB2 taught us how to make an appliqué bird. For the bird on the front cover I followed her instructions and pattern.

Elke maand wordt er in de 'Handmade Book Club' een workshop gepost van een gastdocent. In maart leerde Buffy Greer van B2XB2 ons hoe je een appliqué vogel maakt. Voor de vogel op de kaft volgde ik haar instructies en patroon.

The book closes with buttons and home dyed ribbon.

Het boekje sluit met knopen en zelf geverfd lint.

To prevent the fabric from fraying I added blanket stitches to the edges of the book.

Omdat de stof niet zou rafelen maakte ik dekensteken langs de randen.

First I had to dig up some nice fabric.

Ik moest dus op zoek naar mooie stofjes.

I've chosen Tilda fabric for the outside covers and matching green and pink cotton fabric for the inside covers.

Ik koos 2 Tilda stofjes met rozen voor de buitenkant en bijpassend groen en roze katoen voor de binnenkant.

I attached the 6 signatures to the cover using a Long Stitch - Link Stitch binding.

De 6 katernen aan de kaft genaaid met een 'Long Stitch - Link Stitch' binding.

As interlining I used fusible webbing. To extra secure all the layers I embroidered a few French Knots.

Opstrijkbare gewatteerde tussenvoering gebruikt. Om de lagen extra te beveiligen hier en daar een Frans knoopje geborduurd.

I decorated the edges with a blanket stitch.

De randen afgewerkt met een dekensteek.

For the signatures I used sketch paper (book on top) and drawing paper.

Voor het bovenste boek schetspapier gebruikt, voor het onderste tekenpapier.

The pages open flat, ideal to work in.

De boekjes vallen mooi vlak open, handig om in te werken.

As a closure I attached home dyed ribbon with a button to the front and back cover.

Voor de sluiting zette ik aan de voor- en achterkant handgekleurd lint vast met een grote knoop.

Long Stitch - Link Stitch Binding

 

Since I joined the Handmade Book Club last October I'm addicted to making books :)

Sinds ik lid werd van de Handmade Book Club in oktober vorig jaar ben ik verslingerd aan het maken van boekjes :)

A very long time ago my daughter worked in a furniture shop and she rescued a lot of leather samples from the bin. 

Heel lang geleden werkte mijn dochter in een meubelwinkel en redde ze lederen stalen van de vuilnisbak. 

I kept those samples for ages and now I can finally put them to good use.

Ik bewaar de stalen al heel lang, nu komen ze eindelijk goed van pas.

For today's books I worked with cream and salmon colored leather. It wasn't necessary to back the leather with fabric or paper because the leather was sturdy enough on its own.

Voor de boeken van vandaag koos ik zalmkleurig en crèmekleurig leder. Het leder was dik genoeg, het was niet nodig om het te verstevigen met stof of papier.

This time I wanted to make a wrap-around closure from the same leather as I used on the cover. One problem: my samples are not large enough to cut wrap-around closures from.

Deze keer wilde ik een sluiting maken van hetzelfde leder als de kaft om een paar keer rond de kaft te wikkelen. Eén probleem: mijn stalen zijn niet groot genoeg om er zo'n lange reep uit te snijden.

So I cut the strip as long as possible, set an eyelet in one side and extended the closure with elastic cord. I attached the other end to the cover with a few stitches. 

Dus ik sneed de reep zo lang als mogelijk was en bevestigde een 'eyelet' aan één kant waar ik elastisch koord aan bevestigde. Zo kon ik de sluiting langer maken.

Het andere uiteinde van de reep leder naaide ik aan de kaft met een paar steken.

Made a loop from a scrap of leather and added beads to the elastic cord.

Ook nog een lusje gemaakt van een restje leder en kralen bevestigd aan het uiteinde van de koordjes.

Here's the cream colored version, sewn with pink waxed thread.

Hier de crèmekleurige versie, genaaid met roze gewaxte draad.

I attached the 8 signatures to the cover using a Long Stitch - Link Stitch binding.

 I decorated the link stitches with beads. This has a reason, I had to hide some very poorly made holes :)

Elk boekje telt 8 katernen, ik bevestigde de katernen aan de kaft met een 'Long Stich - Link Stitch' binding. Bij het witte boekje zijn de steken bovenaan en onderaan versierd met kralen. Dit heeft een reden, bij het maken van de gaatjes voor deze steken ging het niet helemaal goed. De kralen verbergen mijn fouten :)

Love the structure of this leather.

Dit leder heeft een heel mooie structuur.

Here I worked with white elastic cord and pink beads.

Hier gewerkt met wit elastisch koord en roze kralen.

For the signatures I used a 120 gr Croquis sketch paper.

Voor de katernen Croquis schetspapier gebruikt met een gewicht van 120 gr.
